Time is of the Essence

Have you ever wondered about the precious little time God gives us here on earth? Lately, it seems like a lot of my friends’ close relatives are dying. One close friend of mine, also a senior, was herself diagnosed with life-threatening cancer a few months ago. Sometimes, I just wish that we would not be on a timetable, with only so many seconds allotted to our existence. However, on a brighter note, I don’t think I would get out of bed in the morning if my alarm clock didn’t yell at me and force me out from under the oh-so comfy duvet.

Why did God create us? Originally, His plan entailed us just hanging out for all of eternity that is until we, of course, screwed it up. Now, I believe that God wants us to reconcile with Him and show others through example how to do the same.

This subject was called to mind after a frustrating day full of scheduling mishaps. I tend to get angry when people make trivial plans for me without prior notification. But the truth is I am inclined to fill my day with these important tasks that mean nothing in the long run. People--not activities should be my focus, and hopefully my vision will clear up soon. After all, how am I ever going to cheer up a friend during radiation treatments if I cannot put my “important” life on hold?

Side note: I teach first-graders at church, frequently absorbing more of the lesson then they do. Today, the memory verse was Philippians 1:3, “I thank my God every time I remember you.” Simple. Profound. The Word of God.
